We’re immensely proud of all the brands we stock here at Appleton Sweets. What’s more, we understand how people have grown to know and love a number of our retro sweets brands.

So, if you are a retro fan, then why not read on and find out some more about some of our retro sweets brands? We’re pretty sure you’ll have tried some of their famous sweets already!


Haribo was founded back in 1920 by Hans Riegel, who was born in 1893 in Friesdorf near Bonn, Germany. He completed training as a confectioner when he finished school and from a small backyard laundry-kitchen went on to set up Haribo, which is now world-famous company. Haribo is an acronym of HAns RIegel BOnn.

We’ve got some famous retro Haribo sweets available wholesale at Appleton Sweets, including friendship rings, giant strawberries and milk bottles. 


Kingsway sweets have been developed under Hancocks and has been established as a brand to help retailers achieve higher margins.

Hancocks Cash and Carry was established in 1962 by Ray Hancock and his wife, when they started wholesaling confectionery from their UK sweet shop in Shepshed, near Loughborough.

Hancocks specialises in the wholesale of confectionery to independent retailers and other businesses. They have 20 independent sites all over the UK, selling 5,000 branded and own label sweet products.

Swizzels Matlow

Swizzels Matlow started in 1928, when Alfred and Maurice Matlow launched Matlow Bros. Ltd, making yummy jelly sweets in a small factory in London.

The company now employs over 550 employees and is located in North Derbyshire. What’s more, Swizzels Matlow has launched numerous products, including the Swizzels Matlow sweets that we have available wholesale at Appleton Sweets.


Taveners is a retro sweets brand that is owned by Tangerine Confectionary. A British confectionery company, Tangerine Confectionary has headquarters situated in Pontefract, West Yorkshire.

The company has grown since 2006, changing its name from Tom’s Confectionary to Tangerine Confectionary. It is now the fourth largest sweet maker in the United Kingdom!

The Taveners sweets range includes: Taveners Coconut mushrooms, Toffee bon bons, Eclairs, Rhubarb and custard, Red and black gums, Black currant and liquorice, Barley sugars, Toasted teacakes, Chocolate limes, American hard gums, Fruit pastilles, Mint humbugs, Wine gums, Assorted liquorice, Jelly Babies, Dairy toffee, Strawberry bon bons, lemon and strawberry sherbets, lemon bon bons and dolly mixture.

You may be less familiar with the company name Candyland since it has been known, until recently as Barrett. We have sweets under the name of both Barratt and Candyland in stock at Appleton Sweets!

Also owned by Tangerine Confectionary, the Candyland range includes: Black Jacks, Bruiser, Candy sticks, Sherbet Fountain, Dip Dab, Catherine Wheels, Dolly Mix, Jungle Mix, Dew Drops, Flumps, Frosties and Fizzy Frosties, Fruit Salad, Gums, Jelly Babies, Milk bottles, Nougat, Refreshers, Refreshers Gums, Refreshers Roll and Mini Eggs.
