Gummy Sweets Ingredients

Gum sweets and jelly sweets are created using a variety of raw ingredients, usually gelatine, sweeteners, flavourings, and colourings. This combination can then be sculpted in to just about any mould, rendering gummy sweets one of the most flexible, adaptable delicious delights ever made. Jelly sweets often low in calories and come in vibrant colours and are full of flavour. Gelatin is also found in soft caramels, marshmallows, liquorice, wine gums, pastilles, chocolate coated mallows in addition to a whole raft of other confectionery, since it gives sweets elasticity, the much-loved chewy texture, and a longer shelf life. Did you know? Gelatin has been used since the time of the Egyptian Pharaohs.

A Brief History of Gummy Sweets in the UK

The first gummy sweet was invented by Hans Riegel during the 1920s. Reigel was the owner of the German sweets company Haribo. When 1982 rolled around, Haribo created the first American made gummy candy.

By 1981, another German gummy sweets manufacturer Trolli chose to create the first ever gummi worm. In fact, this particular sweet has become incredibly popular in the confectionery world.

One of the most well-known jelly sweets around, Jelly Teddy Bears, were originally called dancing bears and used to be liquorice flavoured. Gum sweets - often in the shape of animals - are really popular, with jelly worms being firm favourites with sweet lovers in the US.
