Chewy Fruit Sweets Galore…
Are you a retro chewy sweets lover? Or do you prefer the more modern Swizzles chewy candy or perhaps American chewy sweets? Whatever your preference, you’ve come to the right place. From pink chewy sweets from the 80s through to sugar free chewy sweets, there’s plenty to get your teeth stuck into.
Why We Love Chew Sweets
Fruit chews are definitely some of the most popular retro sweets on the planet. Everything from the brightly-wrapped Refresher chewy fruity sweets and Black Jacks to Jelly Snakes were the vintage sweets of choice after school – often the ones referred to as ‘penny pick ‘n’ mix’. If you prefer yours free of gelatine, check out our vegetarian section where you’ll discover high-quality confectionery suitable for vegetarians.
History of Black Jacks
By far the most popular fruity chews in the world are Black Jacks, don’t you think? These delicious delights date back to the 1920s at the least, originally produced by the Trebor company. Black Jacks used to be around an inch wide and were made from that really hard chewy stuff you had to suck for a while before it became soft enough to chew. As legend goes, Black Jack sweets got their name in the 1920s when the image of a gollywog toy was used to advertise them. Although by the 1980s, this image became regarded as ‘racist’, so the image was replaced with a pirate. This image has since been ditched too, so we’re now left with the black and white swirly background you see today.
